The Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

On the surface, this work might appear more like an arduous scholarly challenge rather than a new popular music record from an artist whose last single featured an international K-pop star. Split into four distinct parts and sung in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to avoid dry academic posturing is nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the stakes feel much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album lies in you never quite understand—or even want to know—what you is going next."

Nearly every track concludes in a totally different place from where it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key balancing act on Lux is straddling the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks as it spins upward. This trick gets echoed by another powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent excess. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While some big pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet where the guests around the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
