Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
