2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Troubled Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the full text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of discussions, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to keep observing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that shift every round. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and hope your squad can secure victory? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can expect further news as creation continues.
